Inspiring Past - Exciting Future

The Public Halls hold a special place in the hearts of many Harpenden residents, rich with history and cherished memories. Preserving this legacy—while creating a new home for our church at the heart of the community—was the inspiration behind our members’ generous commitment to fund the purchase of the building. We are now focused on modernising the space in a sustainable way, while carefully maintaining its unique character and historic charm. We believe this building offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a landmark community space right at the gateway to the town, on the high street.

THE OVERVIEW

Our vision is to breathe new life into this historic building—creating a vibrant, accessible space where everyone feels welcome, the truth of God’s word is proclaimed, and people are strengthened in their journey of faith. Whether you're exploring Christianity for the first time or have followed Jesus for years, we want this to be a place where you feel at home.

As our church family continues to grow, our current space can no longer accommodate our needs. To make room for more people and allow for future growth, we hope to increase capacity by installing a new balcony. In addition, subject to planning permission, we hope to enhance the outside of the building—making it more accessible and welcoming, with a bright, open design that reflects the heart of our community.

THE VISION

The removal of asbestos has already commenced, and our pre–planning application has also been submitted. Once the asbestos is cleared, we will begin the strip-out phase, preparing the building for the next stage of work. The current heating system needs a full replacement, and the entire building requires rewiring.

Our aim is to install modern, energy-efficient mechanical and electrical systems, incorporating technologies such as solar panels, heat pumps, and radiant panels to provide sustainable heating throughout the space. These upgrades will not only future-proof the building but also reflect our commitment to stewardship and sustainability.

THE PLAN

As part of our redevelopment plans, we’re actively engaging in research to better understand the needs of our community and how we can serve those needs effectively. Through conversations with local organisations and conducting surveys, we’re building a clearer picture of where there are gaps and opportunities.

Our aim is not simply to renovate a building, but to create a space that meets real needs. We’re committed to ensuring this project reflects and responds to the heartbeat of the community we’re here to love and serve.

THE GOAL

We’re still seeking donations to help bring the proposed design to life. If you’re interested in supporting the restoration of this historic building, please get in touch with our treasurer using the contact form below. We’d love to hear from you.
